My name is Anthony Scafuto, I was born on May 5th, 1987, in the town of Upland California. Starting back from the beginning, I was the only one in my direct family that was born in California. Most if not all my family were born in New York, as we are all from the East Coast. You may say “what does this have to do with racing” but bear with me and you will understand shortly. Being that my family is all Sicilian and from New York you could say competition ran through our veins just as red wine did. Everything my family did, whether it be hand ball, racket ball, basketball, or bowling (I could go on) you could say it got very competitive always. My brother and I were a little different than most of our family, we enjoyed racing moto, Glamis, tracks, cars or basically anything with a motor. I guess you can say he was my idol and watching him ride dirt bikes started my entire adrenaline hungry attitude when I was younger. We spent a few years racing Moto and its some of the best memories I hold to this day.
When I grew up and got my license, I bought a V6 5th gen Camaro. I got an exhaust company to prototype the car and they did a custom airbox, and full exhaust system for the car and let me tell you, at 17 years old I thought it was amazing! A few years went by and soon enough I purchased the 5th Gen Camaro 1Le (Full Track Package). This was the start of my road course racing and realization of having talent behind the wheel and the vision, discipline, and precision it takes to compete in wheel-to-wheel road course racing. This car was my daily, canyon crusher, half mile roll racing (ShiftSector) and road racing racecar. I put a total of 125k miles on it (and when I say miles, I mean HARD, BEAT DOWN miles) in just under 3 years. When Chevy says “Find new roads” my group and I made it true. Countless trips driving 100s if not 1000s of miles in one day exploring new roads and places, it was some of the best times of my life as at heart I am someone who loves to travel and explore. Sadly, I sold the car back in 2017 due to financial situations and it was also time to let her go to a new home.
But, as every great driver has experienced setbacks, its not how you fall that defines you, its how you get back up! Today, I am proud to say that I am the owner of a 2014 Camaro Z28. This is number 48 out of 484 built in 2014 and 1 of 11 with AC and radio. Since purchasing the car in 2020, I have maybe driven it a total of 20 times with 15 out of the 20 times have been on track. In 2021 I raced a Time Attack series with some of the most competitive drivers in the Western United states. (Kevin Burke, Frank Pacheco to name a few) with little to no seat time, prep or modifications done to the car. I raced at legendary tracks like Laguna Seca and Sonoma Raceway. It was a 9-race series where I podiumed at 7 out of the 9 races taking a season ending overall standing of 3rd place. In 2022 the car went under the knife and in hibernation. I had the motor (top end only) refreshed and did basic maintenance in the engine bay. I had the car gutted and TracSpec Motorsports built me an amazing SCCA, IMSA and FIA certified 8-point nascar cage. After the cage was complete, I took the car to WRTeknica and APR Performance for the custom fabricated chassis mounted wing that was built and mounted. We took the car after 9 months of not driving it, major aero and weight changes along with different tires and threw down a Personal Best at Big willow (Willow Springs International Raceway) with a 1:28:62 besting my previous time of 1:30:83. With little seat time, virtual practice or race prep to be able to go out with a new feel of a car after not driving for 9 months and lay down a PB like that, it felt great!
But enough about me, or my story. Below I will list out my goals for the next 2 years and where I see this car taking me with the right team behind me and support in play.
Main focus and Goal:
Build a fully NASA, GTA, SCCA, IMSA, Pikes Peak certified and competing z28R racecar.
Engine Type:
- 427 Ls7 (Naturally Aspirated)
Suspension:
- Multi Matic single nonadjustable coil overs
Aero:
- APR GTC250 rear Wing
- Steve Christy Composites front Splitter and Canards
My plan is to start knocking things off the list here 1 by 1. I am a single dad of Twins (turn 5 July 5th, 2023) and I have a dog and a full-time job that does not pay me enough and time/funds are not on my side. I am hoping to have the car complete by the end of 2024 so I can compete in the following series in 2025, 2026 and 2027.
NASA Super Touring
Wheel to wheel racing
Class: ST2
